Go Vintage Party- The Outfit

Headpiece by TheanoG
Vila Top
Stradivarius Skirt
Lace Gloves Beyond Retro
Boots Rollini
As I promised last night, here is the outfit of the party. My headpiece is made of feathers, Swarovski crystals and lake pearls (I can't get enough of it!). The lace gloves were bought in Beyond Retro, a second hand/vintage shop in Sweden, which I love vistiting when in Gothenburg. You cannot imagine how many dresses from the 70s I've found, in the style of Nicole Richie! I am so tired I could fall asleep on the keyboard, exams suck life out of me (I know most of you are having the same trouble at the moment).
Take care,
xoxo

Go Vintage Party- The People

In case you missed it!
Lou, Me and Jenna.
Me, Helen and Christina (you should have seen their skirts!).
I -seriously- could not choose between all these pictures!
Don't forget to click on the other bloggers' names, they took many amazing pictures as well.
The headpiece I'm wearing deserves a post by itself, it is handmade by TheanoG, just like every other minihat worn by the other girls (except for Lorelai's one, she is handy and imaginative by herself).
I am gonna dedicate the next post to the outfit of the party!
I have to study. I am sitting a f#@&*!g exam tomorrow morning.
xoxo,

Bil Donovan: Fashion Illustration, Visual Poetry

Recently, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend the opening reception for Bil Donavan's new curated Fashion Illustration show at Gallery Hanahou: Fashion Illustration: Visual Poetry. The show was wonderful, and featured pieces from some of my favorite illustrators: Laura Laine, Stina Persson, Sara Singh, as well as some new ones that I hadn't been exposed to: Daniel Egneus, Tina Berning, ect. Some really wonderful talent. On Saturday I returned to Hanahou to hear Bil speak and demo, on fashion illustration. He painted beautifully for almost two hours from live models, engaging the entire audience crowded into the tiny one-room gallery. It was a pleasure and privilege to hear such a master talk about his craft and his path to a successful creative career, that I fell in love with the art-form all over again.
Mainly, It was important on my end to hear a professional in my desired field talk about the need for such a career and the about of skill and dedication that goes into the practice. All too often, people dismiss fashion, or fashion illustration, as being frivolous and and simple, but so few are able to comprehend the amount of training and level of craftsmanship required to go into such practices. This is perhaps due to the fact that we live in a society where crafts seem a thing of the past and the majority of people, not only have no idea how to work with their hands, but also deem careers that do somehow less-important or lacking in tangible value. This is not to say that either way of working is above the other, but the idea of having and embracing different forms of intelligence in our world would probably get us a lot further.

But, I digress.

The beautiful thing about this experience was the fact that Bil was able, not only to express himself through the media he has mastered, but verbally. He was an eloquent and motivating speaker. Gives me a reason to want to be an educated being as well as pursuing creative self-expression.

In Bil's words about the show:

"I believe that we all share a fascination with the figure, its form and its nuances, especially when played against a backdrop of fashion. My intent is to create a show that communicates the poetry inherent in the use of line, shape, and wit, through a combination of images that reflect a personal vision…."

I'm inspired to create all-over again.

What's Not Chic? Jet Lag!

Hi, everyone. I'm taking a little break from the travel posts for a giveaway! It's my way of saying thank you for reading my very very very long blog posts. Today's giveaway is a box of Genifique Youth Activating Second Skin Masks. These are amazing, almost gel-like cloth masks that will leave your skin looking radiant and feeling very soft. If I could have walked around the office today wearing one of these masks, I would have. I am so jet lagged!! Lack of sleep is not good for your complexion. Eight hours of sleep per night might be the best beauty product on the market--and one of the most elusive!

Anyway, you'll love these masks. They're exclusive right now to our markets in Asia and Europe. I'm hoping we get them in the U.S. very soon.

Just leave a comment and tell me what city or country you would love to visit and why. Even if in your wildest dreams you think you'll never get there. (I never thought I'd make it to China!) Please post by Monday night. We'll pick one name at random. And congrats to Amy, who won the Color Design Matte lipstick giveaway. Check your inbox for a message from me.

Thanks again for following Michelle and I on our travels. Back to the Hong Kong portion of our trip very soon! xoxo

Day Five: Cosmo, Marie Claire and McDonald’s!

It’s our last day in Beijing. This morning, Michelle is doing a photo shoot for Cosmopolitan magazine at Beijing’s most famous photo studio. It’s a few blocks away, so we walk. There’s a little surprise waiting for Michelle: a makeup artist! What a treat. She won’t have to do her own makeup, plus she gets to see a top Chinese artist at work.

He spends most of the time on her eyes, carefully applying eyeliner and adding flirty false lashes. It turns out he’s also the hairstylist. He breaks out the large barrel curling iron and the Elnett hairspray and gives Michelle a Farrah Fawcett look. The shoot takes place next door at the Cosy Café, a small, sun-filled restaurant. The photographer barely says a word, but the editors tell her to look innocent for the first photo and to summon her inner Angelina Jolie for the next. “It’s Cosmo! Says Jerome, the Lancome China PR director. “Sexy!”

The beauty editor interviews Michelle over a lunch of beef soup with noodles and watermelon juice. The questions: Michelle’s favorite Lancome makeup (Le Crayon Khol eyeliner in white, the Color Design Matte lipsticks, Teint Miracle, Le Base Pro and Le Crayon Poudre eyebrow pencil), the questions she’s asked most frequently (how to cover pimples and dark circles) and makeup advice for Chinese women.

We jump in the minivan for our ride to the next shoot. This time it’s Marie Claire in a gritty studio on the outskirts of town. The Marie Claire editors are groovy and cool and have great hair and laid-back style. They’re in the middle of eating lunch from McDonald’s: Chicken McNuggets, Filet-O-Fish, Spicy Chicken Filet Burger, fries and corn salad.

There’s a little confusion over the direction of the shoot. They want “animal,” but no one’s quite able to explain what that means. Cat eyes? Leopard print eyeshadow? Halloween? Michelle does an exaggerated cat eye using the new Cool Lavande eyeshadow palette and the silver and purple Ombre Magnetique shadows from the spring Ultra Lavanade collection. The hairdressers tease Michelle’s abundant hair until it’s about as big as she is. The clothes and accessories for the shoot arrive—in a small backpack! But it’s like Mary Poppins’ backpack. The editor has somehow crammed a dozen H&M dresses and lots of sparkly necklaces, bracelets and headbands in there and pulls out one after the other to our amazement.

The shoot goes smoothly, the only downside being the temperature of the studio. (Look closely at the pictures above. You can see the editors are wearing their jackets and look how close the heater is to Michelle!) The beauty editor smiles as the photos pop up on the monitor. “Michelle has a good camera face,” she says to me.

It’s back to the hotel to change for dinner, but it takes a while to navigate Beijing’s rush hour traffic. Dinner is at a traditional Chinese restaurant near the Forbidden City. We drive through some beautiful Beijing neighborhoods, illuminated by strings of lights. It looks like a set from a 1950s movie. Our new friends from Lancome China join us for dinner and we have a fun night talking and trying new things, like pork neck and Chinese wine sweetened with dried sugar plums. It’s a very nice way to end our visit to Beijing.

Next up: Hong Kong!

Red Rock Obsession

Black Leather Jacket (older than me)
Levi's Self-Customized Jean Jacket
H&M T-Shirt
JC Men's Belt
Zara Trousers
Kem Purse
Jessica Simpson Peep Toes

I had a boyfriend once who told me I'd never succeed,
never be nominated for a Grammy, never have a hit song, and that he hoped
I'd fail. I said to him:
Someday, when we're not together, you won't be able to
order a cup of coffee at the fuckin' deli without hearing or seeing me.
Lady Gaga

Good evening lovelies! I read that Lady Gaga quote today and I wanted to share it with you. It's a reminder for everybody; stay away from people that belittle your ambitions and stick close to the ones that can take you a bit further. With a spark of talent and some stroke of luck , even the craziest dreams can be true. Love you all.

I know most of you feel the pressure of the exams (it is always good to know you are not alone). It's midninght, I've been messing up with a hill of  papers and books, scattered all over my desk, for hours. Everything seems messed up in my head right now. Have a nice weekend sweethearts!

Day Four: Beauty Editors & E-Fluencers

Today is the Teint Miracle/Michelle Phan event at the five-story event space across from The Opposite House, our hotel. The first sesson is for “e-fluencers,” as the top beauty bloggers and vloggers here are called. America’s clearly not the only place with a thriving beauty blogosphere. The second session is for the beauty editors. The e-fluencers are an enthusiastic bunch. They jump around, photographing and videotaping everything: the space, Michelle, themselves, each other. Their style is quirkier too. The beauty editors are more laid back demeanor and fashion wise. I meet the beauty directors from Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar (a guy!), Good Housekeeping and several magazines unique to China, such as Trends Health. Michelle, no surprise, feels more at home with the e-fluencers.

Michelle does a Q&A in front of the audience with Michelle Kwok, a former colleague of mine from New York who is now the assistant general manager of Lancome China. Michelle P. then recreates the “China girl” looks from the video she shot earlier in the week. The whole group moves downstairs for the Teint Miracle unveiling and Michelle demos the product on a model. Afterwards, there are group interviews and one-on-one time with different TV stations and the Chinese versions of YouTube—Tudou and Youku. Funnily enough, both online channels feature bootleg versions of Michelle’s videos. Tudou somehow has more than 700 Michelle videos available, one grainier than the next, even though Michelle’s only made 100 or so videos total. (YouTube is blocked by the Chinese government, as are Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.)

Everyone here is very young. It’s not like New York or Paris where you have career beauty editors and executives well into their second and third decades of work. The fashion/beauty/media industries only exploded here in the past decade, so it’s not surprising everyone is younger. Still, I can’t help feeling like I’m in an Asian version of that science fiction story Logan’s Run, where no one is over the age of 30. But at the same time, it’s exciting. I feel like I’m really witnessing something while it’s happening. Sandy Linter, the amazing makeup artist, and I trade emails. She’s been following the trip via the blog entries and she pegs it: “The Youthquake all over again.”

The Youthquake she’s referring to took place in the 1960s in New York and London and led to so many changes, both political and cultural. It will be interesting to see where China’s Youthquake leads.

It’s a long, long day. We take a 20-minute break then meet in the lobby for the drive to dinner. We have a fun meal with the Lancome China team in a private room at a traditional Chinese restaurant near the Forbidden City. Keeping my vow to try everything, I have the braised jellyfish, a sake-like red wine sweetened with dried plums, and warm, sweet walnut milk. Then it’s back to the hotel, where once again I fall asleep the second my head hits the pillow.

Photos: Michelle and the Lancome team, the e-fluencers, the event space, watching the Teint Miracle demo, Julia & Michelle, gothy attendees, Jerome and the beauty director of Vogue China, me and the beauty director of Harper's Bazaar China, outside the event space at night.
