At the Savoy.

A little piece for my dance friends that I unearthed from the archives.  The image came from an old photo of Harlem Savoy Ballroom dancers doing the lindy hop by Gjon Mili titled "Lindy Hop Improv" (1943). Gjon was a photographer for Life magazine well know for his photos that captured motion. As I've been a lindy hop dancer for several years, the image holds a special place in my heart.

For those of you who don't know anything about the dance, take a peek at this clip: Hellzapoppin (1941).

Kevin Kramp.

Inspired the other day by the fabulously talented Kevin Kramp, an extremely talented Men's Knitwear Designer who just happens to be from my home state (Minnesota, if you don't already know). I was turned on to him by a few other Minnesotans in the Big Apple and was instantly captivated by his exquisite use of shape and texture. A truly unique perspective. You can also see his work in motion in this music video by Minneapolis band (yes, I know, my state pride is obnoxious) Dearling Physique:

A New Decade.

Loosely based on the character Howl from the Miyazaki film "Howl's Moving Castle." 

A little pen and ink to welcome in the new year and a new decade.

I'm excited to see what this year has in store...I think it's going to be good.

Falling Up.

Yes I did recently watch "Black Swan" (which was a great film), and no, that's not really why I painted this.

She's a commission for a friend for her roommate (another friend) who used to do ballet.

Although, I can't say I wasn't inspired/influenced by the film, I also love this clip of "Amelia" (choreographer Edouard Lock's amazing film with Lalala Human Steps, the Canadian dance company). Such powerful music. When I saw this for the first time a few years ago, I loved the song almost as much as the dancing and went out and found it somewhere. Definitely played it a few times while painting this one...

Heat Wave.

In all this heat all I seem to want to do is hibernate in my bedroom with my a/c and paint. Apparently I'm dreaming of fall as my subconcious keeps dragging me to images like this. Lots of texture and layers.

I think I'm ready for cool and breezy.

Happy Sunday! Or maybe it's more appropriate to say happy 3-Day weekend? Either way, it's good.

Lately I've been fortunate enough to meet a lot of amazing new people, experience some wonderful new things, and have a few really exciting opportunities extended in my direction (as well as to some really lovely people around me).
Keep your fingers crossed, but I think summer is off to a good start. :)

Discovered this image on FFFFound! last week. It's part of a really fantastic series of women with BIG hair (my favorite). Couldn't resist. I'm working on a few more but this one was one of my favorites. Love the shape of her body and the floppy, hat-like quality of her coiffure.

The text is from a Damien Rice song by the same title. It's motivation is a little lost without vocals, as the song is ultra-angsty, in true Damien style.

Incidentally, this is one more thing I'm fond of (besides, Damien, of course): good sad music. ;)
