Elle Magazine and RISD Kick Off New York Fashion Week @ Lincoln Center

Elle Magazine hosted a great fashion show this morning, featuring student designers from the Rhode Island School of Design. The students were competing for Elle's Fashion Next Award, plus other awards from Maybelline New York and Kate Spade. It was held at Lincoln Center, the new home of New York Fashion Week. Lincoln Center is best known as the performing arts space that houses The Metropolitan Opera, The New York City Ballet and The New York Philharmonic Orchestra. But for the next week and a half, it's fashion central.

As many of you probably know, Fashion Week's main base was Bryant Park, but that ended last season. I remember seeing Anna Sui's show during the very first season at Bryant Park. I had a standing room ticket and I was thrilled to death. I could barely see the top of Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington's heads as they walked down the runway and I remember thinking, "How does anyone write about the clothes when they can't see them?" This was in the days before Style.com.

This morning's show must have been thrilling for the students. It was a beautiful day. There was a real energy in the plaza outside and everyone seemed really excited to be there. The thrill of the new and a blue sky is always a winning combination. Inside, the students got to see their clothes on real models, styled by real editors in a fabulous venue, with major editors and retailers in the audience. Elle's editor in chief Robbie Myers and beauty director Emily Dougherty were there, along with Elle's reality show regulars Anne Slowey and Joe Zee, and many others.

You can see some of the clothes and vote for the last remaining award, the people's choice award, on elle.com. Not that I want to sway the vote, but my favorites were Caroline Hust, Edda Thors and Jessica Castellano.

Above are some pictures from the show and Lincoln Center. Stay tuned for reports from the shows we're doing the makeup for--Chris Benz, Victoria Beckham and L'Wren Scott. And then there's Fashion's Night Out with Michelle Phan, Elettra and Arlenis! 20 hours and counting! If you're in New York City, stop by Bloomingdale's or Sephora or both and say hi. We'd love to see you.

P.S. I think it was just the birthday of one of our favorite blog followers, TT! TT, if you're reading, happy birthday from your friends at Lancome!
